Climate: Tropical climate with three seasons: In the north it is comparatively cool from November to February, especially during the night. From march through may it is very hot and humid. During the so-called rainy season (June through October) it is very hot and humid as well.

Geographical and economic position

There are big differences within Thailand regarding geography and economy. In the north and northwest the foothills of the Himalaya rise to heights of up to 2590 m. In the south, on the Malaysian peninsula, are the well-known tourist areas of Phuket and Koh Samui.

Thailand is mainly an agricultural country, but there is also a fast-growing industry. The main agricultural product is rice, but caoutchouc, tin and other raw materials and half-finished products are exported as well. It is regarded as so-called threshold country.

Population

The Thai population consists of different ethnic groups. The mountain people, who are the biggest part of the population in the north, are known for their diverse, colourful and diversified culture. They often live isolated and are strongly affected by poverty, criminality, diseases and AIDS.
